They could easily react with "whatever, not for me" or not at all, but they "chose" to shriek hysterically.
I'm not a friend of the generalized popular psychology approach ("Arachnophobia? You must have the secret desire to fuck spiders!"), but usually things that trigger people actually hit closer to home than they are ready to admit.
