“Principles are shared perspectives that affect the decisions you make. Another way of saying it might be, they’re lenses you filter your goals through to determine what approaches are reasonable or acceptable.”

Serendipity at play. I was thinking I need to add some references to @ahl’s treatment of principles (especially the large group workshopping) to my System Design class “book,” and realized that the bit i have on my site is from way back in 2021. And right in the midst of that, that section on principles appeared as if summoned ;)
The 2021 bit is here (note to self: update with current version for goodness sake):

I mean.. it’s worthwhile, but it has evolved.
@RuthMalan man, your stuff is always such a treasure trove.
And I hear you about evolving — one of the reasons I’ve been building more of an archive of older writing and talks is how easy it is to lose the layers of change, and just remmeber the “conclusion” of 10y of iterating on a subject…
@RuthMalan oof, I need to finish my templating on the blog — the underlying data it’s using has all kinds of atuff about where the talk was given, etc. it’s from Confab, in early 2023!
@eaton yeah, i was scanning for a date on your talk…. Need to google i guess… Or! You could just tell us :)
Also, loved metaphoe — whether typo or intentional :)
