   En français on écrit "Août" et on le prononce "out"; tandis qu'en anglais on écrit "out" et on le prononce "aout".

   En résumé en français on a des lettres écrites qu'on prononce pas et il faut deviner lesquelles, ce qui est compliqué; alors qu'en anglais il y a des lettres qu'on prononce et qui ne sont PAS écrites et il faut deviner lesquelles, ce qui est encore pire.

     @Sylvhem Similar reasons, too. In French it's because they used to pronounce those letters 1000 years ago, and in English it's probably because the word was imported 1000 or 500 years ago from another language with completely different spelling rules, or because the spelling was vaguely established at a time when all the vowels were pronounced differently.

     Native English speakers are always like “Ha, ha, look they don’t pronounce all the letters in French. What a silly language.” and it’s perfectly true.
     But also, it’s funny because in English letters are meaningless. You see “falwool” written and it’s pronounced “cat” or something.
