@psychicparrot42 I keep telling everyone that gamedev is one of the hardest things you can attempt as a software dev. It looks easy, especially because getting a prototype up *is* quite easy, but the mid-end game is absolutely brutally hard to do well. Honestly making tools or libraries or other kinds of apps is easy mode compared to this

Sometimes (like this morning) I get overwhelmed when I think about how much I have to do to get a game out. I have to remind myself that I'm only one person and that there's only so much I can do in a day/week/month/year.

@psychicparrot42 I got rejected by every game studio I applied to in the early 90s (no degree ruled me out apparently) and I think in some ways I lucked out given how badly people are treated in the industry. Doing it as a spare time thing was probably more fun; barring killing myself by the late 00s doing too much game engine tech in my spare time

@sinbad I coulda just made software instead. I tried it in the late 90s, but it made me go absolutely insane with boredom.

@psychicparrot42 I had a similar experience; when I left school even tech generally was “something other people do”, there were no computers in the first places I worked, only a few dumb terminals which were looked after by a couple of old scary hermits hiding in a server room. I never thought I’d be able to break into that circle; even though I seemed to have a knack for computers it didnt seem like an available career path for any but a very select wizard class. Things changed fast in the 90s
