@pingviini @eris bleusky can justify its existence with nothing more than "we are starting over with some mind to what made twitter was good" and that has a ton of value.
the problem is people like me are autistic and we mainly see that it diverged greatly from its original goals and its decentralization is a hollowed-out fiction and I can't abide by that lie.
poltiically speaking, in the long run if you go to bluesky you WILL be betrayed, its decentralization claims won't save it from that, people that are super enthusiastic that this is something different are just wrong. But you might get ten or more great years out of it which is pretty good.

@sun @eris The most interesting thing about Bluesky to me is how it shows how much people still yearn for the mid-2010s Twitter/Tumblr experience.
Here's a hot take to bait all the ancaps: Since it has been shown that mid-2010s style Twitter/Tumblr cannot be run at a profit, but people really want it, that sort of service should be be provided on a nation state level as a public service, paid for with tax money or a license fee or a mix of both and federation should be between the national services. Like most mid-20th century telcos used to be run.

@pingviini @eris also like the reality is you're far more likely to lose your data running your own PDS than if you just rely on the big bluesky servers, the only benefit to running your own PDS is I guess theoretically, you could fork the network and keep all your data on the new one but this is a ton of work for pretty minor benefit for a distant hypothetical, and again, most people don't actually care.

@sun @eris I'm just kind of waiting for the first Bluesky enthusiast to wake up one morning and be like "Wait a minute, are the cops on here, too?"
