Rumors of Google canceling development of its tablet are hardly surprising -- the company had never demonstrated any kind of serious commitment to the genre.
Remember, this is a company that had BY FAR the best of breed small tablet in the early 2010s and then just let it fizzle away.

@dangillmor as I read your toot, I took a glance at my 2013 #Nexus7 – my first, beloved tablet. It's been sitting on my desk, turned off, for a loooong time. In the spirit of #PermaComputing, I shall recharge its battery and find a purpose for it

@_elena @dangillmor I still use my Pixel 7 inch tablet for reading e-books, it's the perfect form factor. Slow for much else these days, but if Google made a new small tablet, I'd buy it sight unseen

@_elena @dangillmor Good luck. I have 2 ancient 7s, and haven't had problems getting them to come up after I let them charge quite a while when I rediscovered them.

@shentonfreude thank you! I wonder if it’s a battery connection problem.
Years ago I replaced the battery following a tutorial by iFixIt and I remember it working well afterwards… I need to open it up again to check that everything is good under the hood (no matter how long I plug it in, using different cables, nothing happens). I also tried the 30 second power button trick, but no luck 🥲
