Sick Sun (sun@shitposter.world)'s status on Thursday, 21-Nov-2024 11:03:47 JST Sick Sun the voynich manuscript is maddening because statistical analysis proves it's not just gibberish, but it's constructed such that its alphabet isn't remotely sufficient to encode any known language phonetics. like there's just not enough characters to encode an known language.
if you were constructing a hoax in the 1500s voynich is just massive overkill because not only is it too complex to figure out, even the depth of its complexity would not be recognized by a buyer back then so why exert the effort.
this is not my expertise but one possible explanation is the contents are compressed somehow. why and how- Jeff "never puts away anything, especially oven mitts" Cliff, Bringer of Nightmares 🏴☠️🦝🐙 🇱🇧🧯 🇨🇦🐧 likes this.

people's family trade journals weren't really meant to be read by others they were meant to remind the owner of what the thing was, which was one of the notable difficulties of translating art of war -

Sick Sun (sun@shitposter.world)'s status on Thursday, 21-Nov-2024 11:13:50 JST Sick Sun @icedquinn it might be meaningless. but its not just noise, it was constructed so that it would have entropy like a natural language. but if you actually do the math it's not sufficient to code any known human language. I am not ruling out that the author was so dedicated to creating a believable hoax that he worked out a way to make the writing look more real to the subconscious mind than a random placement of letters but then they didn't go all the way and make it sufficient to plausibly be human writing. I don't even know how someone could have done this back then, fake the entropy of language while completly avoiding using a substitution cipher. -

My guess is it's a cipher of some kind. Probably to do with spagyria (a form of alchemy involving plant medicines). Reason being that people involved in that didn't often want to share their secrets back in the day, and so you get a wide variety of novel symbol sets for use by small groups or even a single individual. It was not uncommon to use more than one language in the same text, and sometimes even in the same sentence. But that's just a guess.Sick Sun likes this. -
