   @arcana @7666 for the sake of argument say that there is a family that came from mexico to try to escape cartels and poverty and they are not going to make it through the week and they are right outside your door. they are not, as individuals, part of a broader invasion/cultural replacement plot.

     @arcana @7666 if someone is starving in front of me I give them bread but if I run a country I might know we have a problem with immigration in the aggregate, it just makes everything clearer if your concerns are separate from national concerns. in a democratic society maybe you have an obligation to let the stranger starve, not an obligation to let everybody on the planet in without restriction. this can't be right and I reject it.

     I feel like there's some assumed knowledge there. Who is saying this? The family? You could believe them, and they could be telling the truth, and you could help them. They get on their feet and on their way and everyone is better.
     
     They could be lying and slit you and your family's throats while you're asleep and take everything and run.
     
     They could be telling the truth, but the cartel kills you for harboring them.
     
     The chances of the first option are much lower than the other two.
     
     I no longer give money to anyone on the street who asks, because previous volunteer work with social workers, and my own interaction with the homeless, leads me to believe the vast majority of them are scammers and shitty. I'm not going out of my way to determine which ones are "the good ones." That's what church outreaches are for. People who really need help will find it with people who deal with their type daily. Those organizations also have the experience to discern who isn't going to put in the work and just go back to their meth addiction.

     @sun @7666 @arcana those immigrants won’t find a good life in the US, the good thing to do is to block them from coming in, then stop de-stabilizing their country with weird CIA stuff and drug cartel business.

     2. use your intellectual faculties to evaluate risk
     
     you are kind of not allowed to evaluate worthiness on your own, so like it gets tricky if a bum keeps asking you for money for food then just buys drugs every time

     you are kind of not allowed to evaluate worthiness on your own

     I knew missionaries who wouldn't give a homeless person money, but would go into a shop and buy them food.

     I knew a Christian friend who made the point you made; who are you to judge them? Does Jesus say give them what is yours, but only if you know they're not going to spend it on booze and drugs?

     The reality is giving homeless people money rarely helps them. In a functioning western society, there is plenty of food and shelter in almost every city. Observing people in these situations shows just handing them money keeps them in an every present state of dependence. And with the people most likely to give being the ones who can't afford too, both the very poor and the very rich constantly leach off the well intentioned people in the middle.

     Things are very complex.
