I think it's excess sugar. A few years back I cut out nearly all bread, soda, pasta, etc ... went from 150lbs down to 135lbs .. stayed that way for like 4+ years ... coming back to America, it's so fucking difficult to find low sugar/carb products. I don't thinl corn-syrup is any worse, but because it's so cheap, manufactures just put in way more than if they were using cane sugar.
I kinda stopped caring and have been going back up over the years. But the healthiest I've been was when I really limited my sugar/starch intake. I'd like to go back, but breaking sugar addiction in the US is insanely difficult.

I have a hypothesis that the biggest driver of obesity is micronutrient depletion caused by increased time from farm to plate, and lower nutrient density in soil. People need more food to satisfy their nutritional requirements, so they simply end up craving more and eating more
