   Nobody ever sets a cyberpunk novel in Iowa. Like, Des Moines in 2040 cyberpunk dystopia probably looks about the same as the 1980s if you're just out walking around. It might even work better because there's still payphones for that cyberpunk phone phreaking aesthetic

     @sun not cyberpunk or iowa but made me think of the expanse which had an episode where they went to baltimore which just looked like present day baltimore except 90% of the population was homeless

     So ... exactly like present day Baltimore 😋 😇

     I like the way Minimum Basic Income was portrayed in those novels/shows ... because the reality is, without some form of infinite power and/or replicators, space communism would look way more like The Expanse and way less like Star Trek

     @djsumdog @animeirl star trek discussion last several years has been so bad because of some reddit trend of "star trek is communist, conservative bigot, it's not FOR you" when star trek's communism is clearly not marxist and is based on technological post-scarcity, and everything about it is super white culture coded

     @djsumdog @sun Earth in the expanse isn't communist. It's the logical extrapolation of liberalism. Eventually there's so many surplus humans that you toss them the bare minimum for subsistance so they don't riot. Basically the Andrew Yang plan
