You can't presume you have the power to set educational policy because you don't. A lot of it is held by people who don't want the population to be educated in this sense.

Each parent tell their children stories at night, spend time with them on holidays and weekends and at mealtimes (hopefully), again that is also a fair amount of power.

What I meant by that comment is that everyone that spend time with children (legally) not only has the opportunity but the obligation to steer young minds in a better direction. Leaving it to the educators is downright dangerous these days.
Edit: Just reading books like "The Demon-Haunted World (C Sagan; A Druyan) could give a different perspective. -
