   When I was little, I had a friend named Maria del Pilar. She had caught polio and had to wear a full steel body brace to keep her spine upright so her lungs wouldn't collapse. She loved Gabriel Garcia Lorca. She was a probing and creative reader who taught me so much about Spanish literature.

   She killed herself at the age of 23, unable to stand living with the pain of her destroyed skeletal system.

   That's who I think of when people try to sanewash RFK Jr.

   I am seized by a bottomless rage.

     @Remittancegirl terrible story. I grew up with the fear of polio (and other diseases we now prevent with vaccines). Then, along came the vaccine, and it was simple. I noted that polio emerged relatively early in the Israeli bombardment of Gaza, and despite the wretched destruction of infrastructure by the IDF, the good people of Palestine came out in their hundreds of thousands to be vaccinated. Good people know that vaccines work and do no harm. Evil people want to stop them

     @Remittancegirl Before vaccines were available, one of my cousins had measles in the 1950s that resulted in encephalitis and permanent brain damage. She lived into her late 40s but she functioned at about the level of a 5-year-old her entire life. The financial, physical and emotional burden on her parents/family was immeasurable.

     That’s who I think of when people try to sanewash RFK Jr.
