  you cant smuggle people in or out of uae or operate them without legal status in uae very easily at all, regular immigration system is used, so it can be limited, and detected far more easily

  @sun@shitposter.world @nerthos@shitposter.world @Disa@shota.house You can argue that human rights groups are underreporting/ignoring modern slavery in the USA, and that may be true, but estimates still place the UAE as having some of the highest rates of modern slavery in the world. You'd have to argue that they're biased in favor of everyone else in the world (including other arab states) to claim otherwise

  i m trying to be careful because obviously the slavery there was not made visible to me but i've just been working through why there are so many super aggressive anti videos that are easier to disprove when you go there yourself. most of the place is just incredibly normal

  @Disa @anemone @nerthos I understand and agree its a weakness of my argument I just think I have a lot of observations that make me believe its not as bad as presented by some western outlets and that slavery in the usa just has to be a lot more widespread so I feel like there is a big prob lem with getting information in any case.

  @sun @anemone @nerthos I think there’s a huge difference between someone visiting and someone living there.
  The country obviously has a vested interest in making itself seem appealing to tourists. Even North Korea tries to make itself appear like a civilized country to tourists. It specifically puts on a country wide show just for tourists, being very careful as to what the tourists actually see to shape their view of North Korea.
  I’m not saying Dubai is on the level of North Korea, but I’m just saying there’s a huge difference between visiting somewhere and actually having to live there for years, dealing with society rules and government agencies and such.

I am very good now at identifying topics that follow this formula and immediately am suspicious of them

  @asa @Disa @anemone @nerthos that happens and the govertnment appears to take it very seriously but they also still have a problem but the problem is actually, when I measure it by many metrics, far less than the USA so I immediately question the motives of people that make a bigger stink about it than the USA when they've only complained about one, unless there'sa context in which it makes sense ("I am from dubai" etc)
