Mastodon is benefitting from the #X exodus (eXodus?) too: The official app downloads are up 47% on iOS and 17% on Android. Sign-ups are up approx. 27% compared to previous month with about 90K new accounts, while the MAU has jumped to 894K (across all Mastodon servers).
We may not be the biggest by numbers yet, but Mastodon (and the fediverse) has proven itself to be an effective and reliable communications platform over the course of the last 8 years, and does not depend on venture capital to survive. The #fediverse is the future.
I spent 25% of my life working on Mastodon. It's kind of wild when you think about it. When I started, Google+ was still around. We're doing what one of the most resourceful companies in the world couldn't do. It's not easy. It's always easier to just build A Website, then slap some ads on it. But the fediverse is the long game.
@Gargron Thx for all your efforts. I was late to the game, but later, I believe, I will still be reognized as an early adopter. More and more people understand what's it all about.
@Gargron Thank you for your good work! I've only been here a while, but I've come to believe that Mastodon and the Fediverse are the only hopes for social media as the gathering place for the free exchange of talents and ideas that we idealistically imagined with dial up BBSs back in the 80s. Makes me sad to see people wake up enough to finally leave X and blindly follow the other sheep to Threads and Bluesky. Mastodon is the way.
@Gargron All I've heard about this week is Bluesky and Threads but nothing about Mastodon, so this is very comforting. I truly wish more people would sign up here and give it a try. Granted I'm told the same thing about the others which I don't have accounts on lol.
@Gargron appreciate your efforts put into the alternative view of what true social media can be. Any update on the #Plushtodon s for the U.S. (North America)?
@Gargron Can anyone here help me to build my Fediverse. Network. I am trying my best to understand but I really have some questions. Can any one care to answer.
"I see this ending with Bluesky switching to Mastodon standards and just becoming another federated server."
One can dream, but that feels like the tail wagging the dog. I like #Bluesky because I can reach the world and sentimental feelings for Twitter circa 2009.
@Gargron Mastodon is a rock. A Giants’ Causeway of a rock. Thank you.
It is said that people always do the right thing… after trying everything else first. I wish everyone well on Bluesky, although to me it feels like they secured their AOL Keyword and not their domain.
I see this ending with Bluesky switching to Mastodon standards and just becoming another federated server.
@Gargron Glad to see it. The internet should go back to its roots of being decentralized. The web feels so much bigger when there’s a plethora of options to choose from.
@Gargron If you ever want to hear a good story about social media, there’s a surprising amount of Xooglers/Googlers still very salty about the failure of Google+.
@Gargron All government agencies and public media should use self-hosted Mastodon instances for their customer-facing communication. Won’t happen in the US anytime soon, but I wouldn’t say it’s an unlikely scenario in Europe. When that happens, users will follow.
@Gargron I began using the internet when there wasn't an internet and you had to keep a dozen floppies on hand in case you needed to reinstall windows 3.x
All good. And deserving of our gratitude and support. But calling anything “the future” means it’s not “now” and leaves open any answer to, “so, when then?”
I’m reminded of that great scene in THE CONTENDER where the President, played by Jeff Bridges, stingingly tells an annoyingly ambitious congressman, “You're the future of the Democratic party. And you always will be.”
I worry Mastodon is the future of social media. And always will be.
@Gargron TY for all your hard work. I believe it is paying off. I left #twitter in 2017 but went cold turkey. Tried #bluesky earlier this year but after a week I deactivated because it felt the same as twitter and I left twitter because of how bad it made me feel. A few weeks ago I decided to try mastodon and it hits different. I'm not steeling myself before opening the app. I'm still getting a feel for it but I'm I haven't left yet and don't intend to any time soon. Long live the #fediverse
@Gargron If you pretended to care about #Black (and other racial minorities) experience here, you would be ten times that. We've tried to tell you all for years and the response has been deafening.
