meso (meso@the.asbestos.cafe)'s status on Friday, 15-Nov-2024 03:48:50 JST meso the fact internal combustion engines are a real thing that works is fascinating it sounds very unlikely something thats constantly exploding is going to last decades and drive you hundreds of thousands of kilometers -

prettygood (prettygood@socially.drinkingatmy.computer)'s status on Friday, 15-Nov-2024 03:51:00 JST prettygood @meso I think its a fascinating example of exactly how much chemical energy is available in hydrocarbons. Consider even the most efficient ICE engines lose something like 40% of the chemical energy of combustion as heat. meso likes this. -

meso (meso@the.asbestos.cafe)'s status on Friday, 15-Nov-2024 03:52:20 JST meso @lina yeah youd expect them to sound like loud annoying explosions but they have a ROAR and shit when you push the throttle it's awesome Lina Inver?e likes this. -

翠星石 (suiseiseki@freesoftwareextremist.com)'s status on Friday, 15-Nov-2024 13:55:11 JST 翠星石 @meso Generally ICE's are designed to deflagrate the fuel rather than explode it, as explosions tend to damage metal.
Engine knocks can occur when the combustion decides to transition from a deflagration to an explosion.
The thing that kills engines is really friction as the yield stress of the metal is higher than what a deflagration of a reasonable fuel/air load can output. -

翠星石 (suiseiseki@freesoftwareextremist.com)'s status on Friday, 15-Nov-2024 14:02:40 JST 翠星石 @sun @meso You can make a ICE engine with gunpowder, but loading the charges and lubrication of the mechanism are problems that haven't been solved; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gunpowder_engine?useskin=monobook
If oil comes into contact with smokeless powder, it may fail to burn, or burn unsuitably.
Meanwhile, petrol will deflagrate just fine even if mixed with oil at a ratio of 16:1; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2_stroke_oil?useskin=monobook#Use
Generally liquids can be pumped reliably, but solid particles cannot be.
