     @meso I think its a fascinating example of exactly how much chemical energy is available in hydrocarbons. Consider even the most efficient ICE engines lose something like 40% of the chemical energy of combustion as heat.

     @meso Generally ICE's are designed to deflagrate the fuel rather than explode it, as explosions tend to damage metal.
     
     Engine knocks can occur when the combustion decides to transition from a deflagration to an explosion.
     
     The thing that kills engines is really friction as the yield stress of the metal is higher than what a deflagration of a reasonable fuel/air load can output.

     If oil comes into contact with smokeless powder, it may fail to burn, or burn unsuitably.

     Generally liquids can be pumped reliably, but solid particles cannot be.
