AT LAST! Phone company O2 finds a socially responsible and ethically sound use for generative AI!

(Mobile operator O2 has created an AI-powered tool that sounds like an elderly grandmother, keeping phone scammers on calls and away from the general public.)

@cstross So the best, most "ethical" use case for AI turns out to be "scamming the scammers"!

@dany_57987 I figure about the only ethical use of LLMs is wasting scammers' time so they don't annoy real human beings. Most other uses for AI slop are just shit, but phone fraud call centres? Totally deserve it.

@cstross Ha ha!! It's interesting... to receive my "welfare" i have to attend AI-job-seeking-seminars every now and then. Instead of personal meetings, employers and employees engage a meta-circus of LLM-processing. Increasing the number of plausible connections by orders of multitude. More LLM use. Begets even more.

Why not see to it that people can live on a wage (so scamming need not scale) and we could use all that energy and nature for better things. Like enjoying it IRL. Meh!!!!

@dany_57987 The entire LLM sector is a pyramid scheme, like cryptocurrencies before it (and, arguably, quantum computing). GANs in general are *not* a pyramid scheme, but the only bit that appeals to uneducated investors is spicy autocomplete, so that's where most of the money goes (rather than into, say, protein folding or medical diagnosis or image recognition *other than* face/puppy recognition).

@cstross Charlie, IMHO the only palusible use for LLMs is accessibility. To allow for example, dyslectics, to be able to "compete" or have an equal share in "democracy" and/or society.
But to use 10% of GDP, fucking up all business domains, indigenous areas and nature just for a glorified automated prostethis is just - - - not for real.
Of course all LLM idiocracy is driven by greed.
Then some "nice" applications arise and by the time the vulture capitalists want their moneys back... poof! 1/2

@cstross What *I* want is an AI agent to hammer a company's phone tree until it gets a human on the line, puts them on hold, rings me, and then connects us.
