me: hey Linux, why'd the wifi stop?

    Linux: wrong password

me: what do you mean wrong password? it wasn't the wrong password when you downloaded all that stuff five minutes ago

    Linux: dunno. wrong password.

me: well I am extremely confident that my own wifi's password didn't change in the last five minutes, but here, I will enter it again

Linux: yeah no that's not the password

me: I literally pasted this from your sister Macbook's configuration. She's connected to the wifi, she says it's working

Linux: that's because Macbook is a sluuuuu--

me: *holds down the power button to suffocate Linux and reboots it*

Linux: wow! that was weird. guess you changed the router's wifi password while I was out because it works now

@semitones @0xabad1dea Could be the fault of iwd or wpa_supplicant. Could be the fault of the driver. Could be the fault of the firmware.

Lot of place where it can fail.

@0xabad1dea but who can I really blame? Network-manager? Drivers?

@semitones @0xabad1dea Quite honestly, if I see this behaviour in a linux system, my guess is: it's a Broadcom WLAN NIC.

@acsawdey In this thread are some explanations, e.g. this: https://hachyderm.io/@GyrosGeier/113467881103375049

@semitones@tiny.tilde.website @0xabad1dea@infosec.exchange the spec. The key is derived from the password. There is no explicit "wrong password" notification, just "using this password, all I receive is garbage, and no one answers me." Because of that, if there is another reason why you receive garbage and no one answers you, it goes Occam's Razor on you.

@0xabad1dea I have had MacOS and iOS both play this game with me too ... if you ever see an explanation for this, please share as I would really like to know what the heck is going on here.

Just feeds my curmudgeonly assertion that "wifi is networking for when you're not serious" and "just buy more cat6 cable and switches" is the cure for wifi ills.

@0xabad1dea ugh. Problems like this annoyed me so much I even laid a 50 m Ethernet cable across my flat to have LAN. (Which was also annoying).
(Luckily, my Android phone has no such problems).
