What kind of person, three pints in, blearily looks around the bar, finally notices the swastika banners on every wall and the preponderance of drinkers wearing brown shirts and jackboots (except for the odd one in full Gestapo uniform) and finally asks, "is this a Nazi bar?" https://ngmx.com/@sindarina/113464444314664444
@zarfeblong Same (on the third-party clients). I was dependent on tweetbot (as I now am on Ivory, which is Tweetbot-in-Fediverse-Drag). But I moved to Mastodon the month Dilbert Stark took over: what was coming was obvious even then. All that's left of me on X is a disused dummy account with the same handle (to block squatters—there's no content).
@cstross Ironically, I stopped supporting Twitter *financially* in 2011 when I decided to only ever use third-party clients and chrono timeline. That was a decision to never see ads and promoted tweets again. We all loved Twitter then, but I still wouldn’t suffer through ads for it.
@cstross This is a misreading though. I got off Twitter in 2022. That was my decision to stop supporting the platform. I was no longer a Daily Active User.
This week I deactivatated my account. That was a purely selfish, defensive decision; I wanted to reduce my searchable online presence. (I’m not disappearing, but I want to be off the list of People Searchable On Twitter.) That doesn’t hurt the platform; it only hurts the public record.
@zarfeblong What I did in November 2022: 1. Created Mastodon account. 2. Used still-active API tools to find my twitter followers in the fediverse. 3. Backed up my twitter user data. 4. Renamed my twitter a/c to @throwaway. 5. Created a new empty @cstross on twitter. 6.Told twitter to delete @throwaway. 7. For about a year, logged in monthly to say "this is a Nazi bar now: follow me on Mastodon".
@cstross Yep same. (sorry, typo in first message — I logged out of Twitter in 2022, the day Musk took over. Typo fixed)
Creating an empty dummy account for anti-squatting reasons is a good idea, but eh, logging in *twice* in two years is too much work for me. I’ll just let it alone.
It's a bit depressing how many people are just very 'well, I carefully curate my feed so I don't see that many Nazis and I know I am giving them more power but I don't want to change my habits'
