      Flo (app)
Flo is a health app that provides menstrual cycle and ovulation tracking. The application is available on iOS and Android. Application's development hubs are in London, Amsterdam and Vilnius. Flo has over 350 million downloads worldwide and 60 million monthly active users as of February 2024. In mid-2024, it reached unicorn status. Company history Flo was co-founded in 2015 by Dmitry and Yuri Gurski, in Belarus. Dmitry serves as the company's CEO. In 2016, the company raised $1 million in seed round funding from Flint Capital and Haxus Venture Fund. In 2017, Flo received an investment of $5 million from Flint Capital and model Natalia Vodianova. Vodianova also helped develop Flo's "Let’s Talk About it. Period" worldwide awareness campaign. In December of that year, Flo began working with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) to spread awareness about women's reproductive and sexual health issues. Also in 2017, Flo launched a question and answer service within the app. In 2018, Flo received an investment of $6 million from Mangrove Capital Partners, with participation from Flint Capital and Haxus, giving...

@JonasJRichter Point taken. Creating "friction" is appealing even if it doesn't do much. I'm up for anything that throws even the tiniest wrench into the data harvest machinery.

In seriousness: I'm not sure what the advocacy to "download a menstrual tracking app and put nonsense data in it" is supposed to accomplish, exactly. What's the mental model of how this works? Spotting _chaos_ in data is relatively easy and filtering out that kind of thing is like an extra few minutes of friction. It's not nothing, but unless you actually know what you are doing I don't see how it is supposed to accomplish much.

@wendyg I was seduced by the cute. As an act of resistance it is at second glance more therapeutic than effective. Anything that throws the slightest wrench into the proceedings is appealing.

@tinydoctor It's a cute proposal, but I don't understand how it will actually help an individual woman whose account data is demanded by the authorities in her state.

"Equally, if not more problematic, is the possibility that data from period-tracking apps could be subpoenaed and used as evidence to prove a criminal loss of pregnancy. Whether non-health related data could be used to suggest that a woman had had an abortion, is unclear."

@tinydoctor as much fun this is ... I think it'd be better for menstruating people to use apps which don't send data at all such as Drip. That's what I'd recommend at least.

@tinydoctor Better: donate some money each month to https://brigidalliance.org or another org doing the work.

The main danger of period apps is authorities accessing the data for an individual person they're investigating. Bad data isn't going to help, but funds to get out of state might.

@tinydoctor despite I support anti-surveillance actions, I am afraid I can't support this idea. According to the info about this program, it is so surveillance-heavy that shall plainly be avoided by all means. Developed in Belarus 🚩, obscure history regarding alleged sharing data with Facebook 🚩, "generous" ability to use "anonymous mode" after 2022 (why the hell this all was compulsory non-anonymous before?? ) 🚩 - like, what? If whoever keeps using it after all that, I wonder if a bunch of geek men trying to spoof their own data could make any difference other than slight increase of user base.

@nanoelquant Despite likes and reposts of my toot, I have come think it just seems like a fun thing to do, but will have little or no positive effect. People just want to fuck somehow with the data being used to track everyone. I didn't think it out before posting. I need to work on that.
