寮 (ryo@social.076.ne.jp)'s status on Monday, 08-Aug-2022 06:09:37 JST 寮 @CPlusPatch @lxo The point of FOSS is that it's auditable, so we can see whether there are some shenanigans going on or not.
Though wireless is always less secure than wired, and will forever be that way, with or without free drivers.
And as @wrongthink already pointed out, feel free to use proprietary soyware if you want to, there should be a FOSS option available because I want to run all liberated software (even though I know this is all a pipe dream), and while I'm encouraging others into doing so too, I'm in no way forcing anyone into doing so, which is often the case with proprietary soyware supporters.-

Gaspard Wierzbinski (cpluspatch@social.linux.pizza)'s status on Monday, 08-Aug-2022 06:09:46 JST Gaspard Wierzbinski @lxo I entirely agree with you, it's just that people here tend to bash on absolutely all proprietary software for absolutely no reason at all sometimes.
Like who the fuck cares if the Linux driver for your 10 year old Linux adapter is closed source, that doesn't mean it's fucking sending all your wireless traffic to the CIA.
People who demand that all software is fully FOSS are absolutely insane in my view, it's never going to happen focus on making it respectful of users instead

Alexandre Oliva (lxo@gnusocial.net)'s status on Monday, 08-Aug-2022 06:09:47 JST Alexandre Oliva please don't conflate private with nonfree. most private code is actually free software, since all the users have full control over the computing done with it. that's a bit of a corner case, because "all the users" turns out to be the developer alone
I totally agree that a developer is entitled to keep their code from being used by others; make it available for others to use is a freedom, not an obligation
what is unethical is to make it available to others in ways that do not respect their freedoms; that enables the developer to subjugate the users. even if the developer never abuses that power, the fact that it's there is harmful and unethical enough for us to reject and recommend against such behavior -

Gaspard Wierzbinski (cpluspatch@social.linux.pizza)'s status on Monday, 08-Aug-2022 06:09:49 JST Gaspard Wierzbinski Yeah it's proprietary but that doesn't mean it can't be good, y'all need to chill the fuck out people are entitled to make their fucking code private if they damn well want to.
Open source is generally "better" but proprietary ≠ automatically bad
