   Home automation really died out, huh. I mean, I have always been intrigued by the idea but haven't found any good uses for it beyond smart lights and shades.

     @thanius I save a shitload of money on automating heating and car charging :) When the kids were younger I had audible notifications in the mesh speaker system whenever doors to the outside weren't closed etc.

     I'd say there's lots of utility - but outside of "the common stuff".

     The sky is the limit. It really depends what you want to do with it.

     I've got a notification when it's time to flip the laundry based on where the washer and dryer are in their cycles.

     Lights controlled by mmwave sensors.

     Leak sensors that push notifications to my phone when water is detected.

     Auto-locking on my doors after x mins.

     I haven't bought new appliances specifically for this purpose. It's mostly been as they die they get replaced. It's hard to get a new appliance that doesn't have some sort of smart app. Home Assistant can integrate with most of them.
