#Trump will be the next #UnitedStates president, after he was #impeached 2X & #convicted of state #crimes. He campaigned on…instituting #tariffs on most imports,…mass #deportations, rolling back #climate regulations & cracking down on #dissent. Trump won after he campaigned on #nativist & #racist rhetoric about #immigrants. He spent his campaign trying to convince voters that their financial livelihoods were better when he was in office [despite inheriting Obama’s economy & then tanking it].
@Nonilex we all know that these tariffs will only increase profits for the shareholders with massive positions.
I dont want to spend time devoted to watching and tracking, but last time I didn't keep all of the quotes that conflicted with themselves. Not that it will change any minds, but I think I am not going to let obvious lies and acts that set up obvious bad outcomes slip away. For my own sanity
#Trump’s central #economic pitch is to institute #tariffs on nearly all US imports. He says it will help bring back manufacturing jobs - untrue. Many economists say this would jolt global #trade & raise #prices for all Americans by potentially thousands of dollars a year because so many goods Americans buy are made overseas [including Trump’s trashy products]. Trump has also said he would cut #taxes for #corporations & the #wealthy & end #SocialSecurity.
He has indicated he will use the government — & potentially #violence — to target his perceived enemies: He has talked of appointing a special prosecutor to “go after” President Joe #Biden & his #family; he has suggested that former Republican congresswoman #LizCheney should have guns “trained on her face” & mused about #jailing his political opponents.
It’s also widely expected that the plans from #Project2025 will come to fruition.
#Trump has a plan to fire “rogue bureaucrats & career politicians” & install loyalists in the federal government. He wants to use the #military to put together one of the country’s biggest #deportation efforts in the past century, setting up detention camps [#ConcetrationCamps] at the border. He plans to fire #SpecialCounsel#JackSmith, who has brought 2 federal #criminal cases against him for his efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election & the hoarding of #ClassifiedDocuments.
#Trump also unleashed a tidal wave of #lies, crude sexism, said he would protect American #women whether they “like it or not” & threatened to exact #retribution against his critics.
He indicated he’ll try to greatly expand presidential #power to crack down on #dissent & install #loyalists in the federal govt.
He said he would rule like a #dictator on “Day One.” And those who served at high levels in his first admin, including his fmr chief of staff & top general, said he is a #fascist.
#Trump still denies he lost the 2020 election, & as part of that effort, he proposed “the termination of all rules, regulations, & articles, even those found in the #Constitution” He says his political opponents — from #Democrats to #protesters to #journalists — are “the enemy from within” & “should be very easily handled by, if necessary, by #NationalGuard or, if really necessary, by the #military.” He wants to pardon those who attacked the Capitol on #Jan6, 2021.
Vice President #KamalaHarris has not conceded yet. She decided not to address supporters on election night. But it would be a surprise to many election watchers if Harris refused to concede. While campaigning, Harris criticized #Trump for denying the results of the 2020 election.
#Climate activists doused the front of the US Embassy building in #London with orange paint to protest #Trump’s victory. “Trump’s win puts the lives of ordinary people at risk, everywhere,” #JustStopOil wrote on X, urging people to “disrupt business-as-usual” to prevent a “climate breakdown.” On the campaign trail, Trump promised to once again exit the landmark #ParisClimateAccord, arguing that it places an unfair burden on the United States.
A ballot measure that would have enshrined #abortion rights in the #Florida Constitution fell short of the required 60% approval Tuesday — a bitter outcome for #ReproductiveRights advocates who had campaigned against the state’s 6-week abortion ban.
On #ForeignPolicy, #Trump could further disrupt the world order by leaving #NATO or severely weakening the 75-year-old transatlantic military #alliance. He has also expressed skepticism at continuing #US aid for #Ukraine to fight back #Russia’s invasion. He has said little of the #war in the #MiddleEast but has privately told #Israel’s PM #Netanyahu “to do what you have to do”.
His agenda got a boost because #Republicans also won back the #Senate, which is increasingly filled with #Trump loyalists. The #GOP, however, is still fighting to keep control of the #House of Representatives. If #Democrats win it, they could block legislation with a simple majority.
#Trump said he will let #RFKJr, a #vaccine skeptic open to removing fluoride in drinking water, run federal #health policy. And Trump & congressional #Republicans have said they’ll get rid of the #ACA.
Trump has said #ClimateChange is a “hoax” & campaigned to end the #Biden admin’s #climate initiatives & rules aimed at lowering #emissions that contribute to #GlobalWarming & extreme weather. Trump instead has said he will expand #oil & #gas#drilling in the US, including in protected lands.
For many American #women — most of whom appeared to be supporting #Harris — it was a defeat infused w/despair: A #female candidate lost for the 2nd time in 8yrs & just 2yrs after #AbortionRights were stripped away in many states.
Particularly brutal was the victory of an opponent w/a long & troubling history on #gender: #Trump was held #liable for #SexualAbuse & has bragged about groping women on tape. At least 17 women have accused him of #SexualAssault.
#Trump win in #Wisconsin puts him over the top. The full count is not over, but Trump appears on course to win the #PopularVote. He would be the first Republican to do so since George W. Bush in 2004.
Vice President #KamalaHarris’s defeat marks the second time in 8 years that a #woman became the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee only to fall short of a barrier-breaking victory. #Harris’s campaign said she would address the nation on Wednesday.
Moving to #Denmark is easy for EU citizens, who can live and work in other EU countries. But #American citizens would need to apply for a permit on the basis of special qualifications or for jobs where there is a shortage of workers. The majority of Europeans would have preferred a Harris presidency, acc/to aggregated public opinion polling, but that is especially true in #Denmark, where polls found that only 4% of people said they would vote for #Trump over Harris, if given the choice.
#Google searches for “easiest countries to #move to from the USA” & “can I move to Canada if #Trump wins” have spiked in the #UnitedStates in the past 24 hours. Europeans are also wondering if they might attract disgruntled Americans. The Local Denmark, an English-language news website, published a checklist on residency rules for #Americans thinking of upping sticks to the Nordic country.
#ElonMusk says #Trump win is just the start of his political ambitions Trump called the #billionaire a ‘new star’ during his victory speech & #Musk announced plans to push #GOP candidates in the 2026 midterms & beyond.
In the 2024 contest, "#Harris didn't play the #gender card; #Trump did," said Susan Faludi, the noted feminist author of "Backlash," a book on the counterreaction to advances in #WomensRights. Harris was "pretty pitch-perfect" during her abbreviated campaign, Faludi said, making her defeat "so much worse for future generations of aspiring #female politicians."
Nicholas Valentino, a political scientist at the U of Michigan & colleagues Carly Wayne & Marzia Oceno studied the attitudes of voters in the 2016 race. They found something unusual that didn’t appear in any of the previous 3 presidential elections: People who scored higher on an index of subtly #sexist attitudes—including that the push for #gender equality was overdone — were more likely to vote for #Trump, even controlling for variables such as partisanship & ideology.
#Trump ran a campaign heavy on domineering rhetoric that reveled in displays of strength & supposed masculine prowess, veering at one point into a discussion of male genitalia. Trump called Harris stupid, lazy & weak; he shared lewd insults about her & said world leaders would treat her “like a play toy” if she were elected. In the campaign’s closing days, he proclaimed that he would protect #women, “whether the women like it or not.”
Harris’s loss is disheartening enough, but for the country to elect someone who has made his #disrespect for #women clear is basically kicking you when you’re already down.
Surveys conducted before the election pointed to a wide — & perhaps historic — gender gap in the support for the two candidates, w/most women supporting Harris & most men supporting Trump.
#ElonMusk’s presence at #Trump’s side Tuesday night marked an inflection point in an unprecedented metamorphosis, as the world’s richest man vowed to turn his erratic but *visionary* ethos more fully to the nation’s #politics. Since endorsing Trump in July, #Musk — once known primarily for pushing boundaries in electric vehicles & rockets — has become a prominent force in the *#conservative* political movement set to return to the White House.
I congratulate President #Trump on his #election as 47th President of the United States of America, as well as Vice President-elect #JDVance & their families.
I also thank President #Biden & Vice President #Harris for their service to our country.
The strong turnout in this election is a sign of the health of our republic & the strength of our democratic institutions.
#Wealthy donors have long used fat pocketbooks to shape the political landscape, but #ElonMusk has unique #power. In addition to his immense wealth — Bloomberg estimates his net worth at >$260 billion — #Musk has an avid online following of hundreds of millions, control of a major #SocialMedia platform & a willingness to push political #ConspiracyTheories & legal boundaries, allowing him to redefine notions of how a business tycoon can engage w/ #politics.
Industry experts say #ElonMusk’s companies in the space & auto industries — already major federal contractors — are poised to gain billions more in a #Trump admin.
#NASA depends on #SpaceX for rocket launches, including to supply the International Space Station, & the company’s #Starlink#communications#satellite division is expanding into #surveillance contracts. #Tesla is working to launch autonomous taxi vehicles without steering wheels or pedals, a goal that would require federal approval.
#ElonMusk is known for…eschewing #regulatory restrictions. He is notorious for setting sky-high expectations for employees & then cutting loose individuals or whole teams that disappoint him. #Musk’s recent political ops have shown some of those hallmarks. Multiple contractors working w/AmericaPAC were suddenly fired & the group received a warning from the #DOJ last month that Musk’s daily million-dollar voter giveaway could breach #ElectionLaw.
