     this is the way it always was and always will be

     the disappointment is not that we still must work to maintain our freedoms

     the disappointment is those airheads who think you fight for something once, and then its over, and that valuable thing is never in jeopardy again

     that's just not how life works

     luckily, a large chunk of the work required is in one simple easy thing:

     @benroyce @jnl I agree, but even THAT isn't enough.

     Voting is not fire-and-forget.

     You have to keep holding those you voted for accountable continuously.

     They're in your service, therefore they are subject to continuous scrutiny.

     As i like to put it: Vote for them, then chase them around the block.

     a republic, if you still want it. I think we now better understand that the maintenance of such a thing is a fucking lot of work, and the survival of it is never not in peril
