Honestly, while it is important to focus on what Marx believed, I think it's more important to focus on whether "free market socialism" would actually work as a viable transition to communism, and I'm of the opinion that it wouldn't. Even if you separate the free market from capitalism, the profit motive, the existence of private property, and competition could lead to the restoration of capitalism.

Private property was still illegal, all means of production belonged to the workers/government.
