On January 20, the Trump White House will advise all U.S. water systems to remove fluoride from public water. Fluoride is an industrial waste associated with arthritis, bone fractures, bone cancer, IQ loss, neurodevelopmental disorders, and thyroid disease. President

I've never understood why fluoride in drinking water has never been challenged on the ground that it's a forced medical treatment. The only justification for it's use is medical, and forced medical treatments are generally illegal.

      > No, circumcision is not forced medical treatment. It is a public health measure to improve penile health, similar to adding iodine to salt or vitamin D to milk.

@Humpleupagus @Alex_Linder Leaving aside the obvious answer (because Jews said so), it is a little strange that doctors would allow it. Doctors generally don't like prescribing medicines to people who are also ingesting other medicines because it can cause all sorts of medical problems.

The idea of adding fluoride to the water supply everyone drinks from for "health reasons" is, medically speaking, about as sound as adding antibiotics or Viagra to the water supply for "health reasons".

What's strange is that they put iodine in salt, but not in water, when it's an alternative to chlorine. The reason they didn't put it on water is because iodine can cause health problems in some people.

The idea was that people were deficient, which itself causes health issues, like low thyroid hormones, but I don't know how prevalent the issues were. I'm just saying it's weird that we didn't add it to water in lieu of chlorine, when ingesting chlorine has no benefit and may be harmful.

What's also interesting is that they're all halogens. So we've basically altered our intake of each through "public health measures," but to what effect....?

I thought people got sick or like were iodine "deficient" or something before they put it in salt, is that whole thing bullshit?

I am not a well educated person in chemistry but I don't like the idea of all the chemicals in the water. I have a well. I wouldn't live anywhere they can put things in my water, though I will say the aquifers are probably fucked too. Just not as fucked or as easily accessible.

I understand that delivering voluminous amounts of potable water to the masses is not an easy task and steps should be taken to make sure it isn't injurious to health, i.e. that the water doesn't have negative biological effects to the extent feasible. This is the justification for chlorine and filtering etc.

Fluoride doesn't serve this purpose. It's not there to keep the water from having negative effects, it's there to cause a biological effect in the recipient. Further unlike the example re salt and milk, where equally priced alternatives are available, the public generally can't avoid the use of fluoridated water without incurring significant expense. That's why I contend it is a medical treatment and a forced one at that.

To the extent it removes salt, it's to make water potable. So unless there's something being added in, I guess it's ok.

@Humpleupagus @Alex_Linder @Aly @LivingSpaceStudios Iodine in water is easier to overdose.

With salt, though, you're going to overdose on salt itself at least twice before the iodine in it would get you.
