Rant of the morning: If I complain about a thing on my OS of choice, “switch to Linux!” is useless advice. I’ve used Linux for longer than many of the advice-givers have been alive, including many years on the desktop. I know what advantages it has. I also know what disadvantages it has, and you can safely assume that me not using it today is an informed decision. “Just switch to Linux!” doesn’t make me pause and consider it as though it were novel.

Grrr, had to get that out of my system.

@tek There was something magical about IRIX desktops. Probably because in part I was just a user and never had to administer them, but still.

(I also badly miss Ultrix as well)

@jeff On Mac, by default (or maybe at all?) windows can’t span 2 monitors.

Other person: On Linux you can manage windows however you want!

Me: I started on WindowMaker and ended on Xmonad. Tell me more about the 47 window managers I’ve used that you’ve never even heard of.

(I almost never, ever actually want to do that. I wasn’t even really grousing, more observing that it was something you can’t do.)

@steevmi1 I missed that whole era. Mac’s the only commercial Unix I’ve heavily used. A past job had me running a build farm with HP-UX, Solaris, and some other long-toothed things but I many just SSHed in and treated them like weird Linuxes for the purposes of getting them to run GCC.

@jeff “Spaces” are their virtual desktop-like thing. By default you can independently flip between separate spaces on a per-monitor basis. With that, they all switch together.

The thing I mentioned is this: Suppose you have a window on the left screen. If you drag it to span the border between the left and right screens, and let go of the mouse button, the whole window snaps into whichever screen had the mouse cursor on it.

This isn't a problem at all in practice.

@jeff It very well may be possible. I'm not personally interested in it but I bet someone out there's made it work. I'm definitely not gonna switch OSes for it though. 😀

@tek Hmm ya know what. I have a dual monitor setup not in use. I'm gonna connect them to my mac mini so I can experience what you are...rn I have a giant curved monitor connected so I don't have a split screen. If it is possible, I'm gonna finger it out.

      From duet's site:
      1. Please open 'System Preferences' and select the 'Mission Control' preference pane, where you will see an option labeled 'Displays have separate Spaces'

      2. When this checkbox is selected, OS X will snap a window to whichever display that window has the most area on

      3. When unchecked, OS X will allow a single window to span across multiple displays (including Duet) and will act as one large continuous display

      - Any changes to this setting does require a logout -

I hate to come with a "well actually" but have you tried jeff's advice?

I might be misremembering, but that fixed my issues back in the mac Intel days.
