     @lain@lain.com that does remain a pretty central theme but it does go to more interesting places and has a surprisingly nuanced take on religion for a jrpg with an evil pope

     @lain@lain.com tbf anime is always gonna be kinda on the nose with its messaging but at least it has enough subtly to use some metaphors and mix around some things instead of direct copy-pasting real world issues unchanged like most modern western HR-written games do.
     
     for example the populace's support for Louis seems at least informed by the last decade of american politics though louis himself is not at all like Trump in his characterization of beliefs

     @anemone i guess i'm just kinda surprised to see a 'gee whiz isn't democracy and equality the best?' theme in a japanese game, with no apparent influence by westerners. It just usually isn't a big topic, not least because most asians are rather racist/classist/whatever you want to call it, and the japanese aren't much different

Also my impression (admittedly as an outsider) is that the entertainment industry in Japan suffers from less ideological or audience capture than the west, leading to its output being a bit more countercultural while the post-2000s western media landscape is dominated by both
