Diary of an ASD Squirrel. Day 368 , Wednesday 30/10/2024
Got up just after 7am after a mixed nights sleep, the weather is unseasonably warm & under the thick winter quilt I gently cooked!
11:55 Just got back from Sainsbury’s, crumbs that was a shock to the old wallet!
A few observations hit me while shopping today:
1. It’s cheaper to get more than you need, especially if it is fresh produce like celery - I ended up getting a whole celery bundle (?) rather than the smaller bag of chopped celery sticks because it was cheaper - most of the celery will go to waste because I’m not fond of it. Mrs S might use some of it but most of it will end up in the composter.
2. The drive to automate is insane, & ridiculous - I used their ‘self service’ bag n tag thing for the fresh loose produce & it failed miserably on the garlic bulb I bought along with the carrots etc. I found out that one could still take loose fresh produce to the till (I need to remember the little baggie things - 30p each is flipping expensive! ) & that was fine!
3. It’s really hard to cook using fresh ingredients cheaply! I made a cheat stew with a can of beef stew & a can of baked beans for a 10th of what it cost me to make a fresh stew & that includes the price of the energy used to cook it!
I forgot to take the bags in with me out of the car so had to buy a plastic bag 🙄🤦♂️
All in all I remember why I don’t like shopping any more.
It also struck me as I drove back home that we, as a society, have not learned a blessed thing following the challenges of the last few years. We are truly not apocalypse ready!
17:00 I was a bit late starting the prep - never cooking again! Trying to fry floured meat in the bottom of the pressure cooker was a disaster! It went like glue! I don’t know what I did wrong but whatever it was I did it properly wrong!
Mrs S chose this moment to come in & get the cutlery - it’s not a big kitchen & she knows I hate people in my space when I’m working!
I’m close to overwhelmed - I’m sure this stew is gonna be awful, I wasn’t able tot fry the onion & garlic properly & the meat - well Nuggan only knows how that is gonna come out - 20 quids stuff is on the verge of simply being dumped in the bin!
19:00 This has knocked me back & it isn’t even cooked yet , flipping Conner & his bright ideas!
Mrs S will be cross because she hates eating late! She won’t say anything but it’s already to be seen in her manner! If the meal is awful then it’s gonna be a long night!
If I cook again - & that at this point is a MASSIVE ‘if’ at this point, then no fancy methods, just tried & tested methods!
19:30 I used too much liquid & too much olive oil so it’s a bit thin & greasy but it’s edible. Mrs S ‘loves’ it, but she has a fairly low bar. I think any chef would pour it down the sink.
20:45 just spent the better part of 45 minutes cleaning up! Much as I hate cooking, I hate cleaning up after I’ve spent 2 ½ hours cooking more!
I will be good for absolutely nothing tomorrow, standing for so long has shagged my back & my PF foot. For what, 30 minutes of vague pleasure. I’ll stick to the cheat stew from now on, far cheaper & far easier to clean up afterwards!
Final Thoughts.
I need to go back to basics with my cooking I have not cooked properly for years & tonight’s effort proved that I have lost any minimal skill I had.
Thank you to all those who are helping me on this journey, in a myriad different ways. I am thankful to each & every one of you! 🫂 🫶🐿️🖖
