     @mangeurdenuage Wouldn't a printer driver be better as a standalone program rather than a kernel driver?
     
     In userspace, you have access to all the fine GNU libraries and you aren't beholden to whether upstream accepts your patches.

     @Suiseiseki There's also wifi drivers to do, be it usb mini pcie or "smartphones".

     @mangeurdenuage Sure, Wi-Fi drivers do need to meet certain latency demands, so they really need to be a kernel driver.
     
     Linux does already have its half of most Wi-Fi drivers already - the other half that runs on the hardware is needed though.
