compressing some games (mostly, VNs) that I either played already or I would play later to store on backup drive
Some compress pretty bad, like 95% ratio, I don't even bother waiting and just use plain TAR for them.
But some... listen, if zstd on fast settings can compress your game like 2-3x times, you're doing bad job at compressing assets. And that's VNs, mostly pictures and sometimes voice if we're lucky.

@a1ba zstd is basically lz, optimal parsing (i think?) and an arithmetic coder.
lot of vns like to use png or something. to really crunch them you have to unpack the compression on those or do something [slightly] lossy. :neofox_up_paws:

@a1ba I think I've seen some use .wav files…

@a1ba @lanodan yeah perceptual lossless is a thing. JXL for example has better lossless than png, or can do nearly-lossless, though it will be a lot bigger that way

@icedquinn I'm surprised that they often don't compress voice lines. like @lanodan noted below, yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if it's just uncompressed PCM.
As for images, I think there could be done something without hurting the visuals that much.

Slay the Princess is great, but their use of .flac for voices always surprised me. The game should probably not take 12GB of storage space, despite being fully voiced and including a lot of distinct pictures.

@vv221 @a1ba Well at least it means you can freely try other codecs.
I think the other VNs I played with voicing used lossy codecs, like Kindred Spirits on the Roof (w/ Full Chorus DLC) uses opus, and 407MB worth of it, wow.

@vv221 @a1ba Also pretty sure I found some bloopers/raw recordings in Heart of the Woods, fun.
