@celesteh The question of “should he retire” is also related to his age and health. He's over 70. He had a cancer treatment last year, losing his long hair and beard. There are reasons for him to step back for age reasons. Is his age a problem because his world-view is aged, as well? That shouldn't be a surprise. I think most 70+ year old stick to outdated ideas. Can I respect them for what they did? Sure! Times change, they change through people like RMS, but change continues.

Not only does he look and behave like a Hippie, this ignorance of especially sexual taboos is part of the Hippie culture. Certainly, RMS is a rather special case of a Hippie.
The Hippie movement was in significant parts a success, but is nowhere secured. The movement as a whole is too big for any single person to cover everything.
Did he care about the part of the movement you care most? Not enough, for sure, as expected.
