Microsoft buys Mojang, opens the marketplace for its Bedrock edition, now likely full of "stolen" ideas, not to mention outright stolen content in some cases.
In 2019, a map claiming to be the original Skyblock releases on said marketplace. Soon many others follow, likely making millions in profit (also for Microsoft).
Noobcrew, the original creator, applies for a trademark for the name he came up with, soon after seeing the first map appear. Fights to this day as a single individual against a dozen companies who argue the name is now "too generic".
Other platforms (Roblox, Fortnite) and creators have agreed to change the name of their creations, but Microsoft and their marketplace partners stand firm. Heck, even a Chinese company handed over their trademark regarding a "Skyblock" iOS app to the original creator.
This once again shows that companies are happy to oppose creators if doing otherwise would cut into their profits. Even unwilling to compromise. And they use those creators' good will against them. They do the same with FOSS.
Imagine creating something at the age of 15, getting amazing feedback, thousands of youtubers and streamers creating content off your idea, millions enjoying it. And after years of everyone enjoying that content and many spin-offs freely in the spirit of the early Minecraft community, Microsoft steps in and wants a piece of the pie, with people copying the idea and name and selling what was previously free, for money.
And all you want is keep the name you came up with, for other people not to claim to be "the original", to maybe build your own game in the future. I think that's deserved. Good luck to Noobcrew.
I encourage everyone to check out the first two posts in the linked thread and share this. Maybe, just maybe, it can reach the right people, or just enough of them. Post it in various places, spread awareness. Have a discussion, about this case or similar ones.
Also, fuck Microsoft. And, as a former Minecraft modder: Fuck the Minecraft Marketplace.
