Rusty Crabjesus this video is tone deaf 1) almost the entire reason that serious professionals don't run linux is because serious software barely exists on linux. People don't "use operating systems" they use software that runs on those operating systems 2) people do not install operating systems. The only instance I can think of where everyone didn't use the default forever was Internet Explorer and that's because it sucked so much ass it was nigh unusable.
@RustyCrab Serious professionals don't try using a kernel that doesn't work on its own, they install GNU/Linux.
windows is a garbage dogshit OS that is unprofessional in every way and any real professional will do whatever is needed to stop using it and actually get work done.
@smug@RustyCrab Why waste the time and energy when Windows is preinstalled and just works for Grandma? Better yet just get Grandma a iPad or some other tablet or a Chromebook not even worry about it.
If you get one of the stable distros and install basically nothing on it you are generally fine. Most of the issues is nothing a restart can't fix. If you are a true grandson you set up a way to ssh in yourself to fix problems yourself when she's calling you.
The problem with Netflix is the Widevine which adds another barrier (I'm not certain how far linux got in fixing that problem).
Their grandma probably just needs a browser. It got email, word processing and cat videos. No highres netflix though, get fucked grandma. It's okay honey, you can just use a plex server I put in my basement teehee.
Zoomers appear to be even less technically literate than boomers at this point.
@RustyCrab i don't think computers or software is important enough to most people that they'd care to put the effort into learning, installing, and maintaining something like a different os.
@gray I don't even bother bringing up the fact that "linux is hard" because everyone already knows. If someone doesn't know it's because they're convinced their grandma can open a terminal and start using coreutils like second nature. Not even worth trying to convince them of anything.

@RustyCrab Did you see Lunduke's video where he answered a question about whether he thinks the EOL of Windows 10 will actually get people to switch? He took a very practical approach to why the answer is no.
@smug Chromebook hardware tends to be utter garbage full of bugs unlike thinkpads that seem to have acceptable quality hardware, with bugs that have all been worked around in software.
Unfortunately, both chromium and firefox implement "EME", which means "widevine" handcuffing works out of the box in proprietary versions of firefox.
Of course, "netflix" will show only a 720p or 1080p stream when it thinks that the handcuffs aren't constricting enough, so you shouldn't use "netflix" - you should download the video with transmission or another free torrent client and play it in full quality with VLC or mpv.
@smug@gray I had a super underpowered Chromebook that I installed Linux on and it was the most flawless experience I've ever had. Next best is a system76 one that I'm using now. It's basically just a clevo laptop with custom firmware.
@smug As a 20 year old single male, I think it's very hard to find a girl who doesn't worship proprietary software and can understand that I only use free software and do not run proprietary software unless I'm getting paid to do so and it's on someone else's computer.
I've heard girls jokingly ask to "Netflix and chill", but when I tell them I refuse to watch videos "on Netflix", even if it is not being run on my computer, as it is such a threat to freedom that I feel uncomfortable with legitimizing it in that way and ask them what movie(s) I should prepare for mpv playback in 100% freedom, they stop talking to me.
What's worse, if they do stay, they see my 100% freedom computing setups and how all browsers are configured not to run proprietary JavaScript and how youtube.com redirects to an invidious instance and think I'm weird.
Sometimes I get their numbers and I send them a greeting via SMS, also noting that I'm reachable over irc and email, with my gnupg key attached via MMS and instructions how to verify the key and they often mumble something about "green bubbles" and "Android", even though the message was sent via asterisk from Emacs.
I clearly don't use dating sites as those require running proprietary software, plus none of them have any respect for privacy either.
How come it is so hard to find a girl who is indifferent about software freedom, rather than dedicated to never achieving it?
I feel like I'm going to be a wizard and then stay like that forever (but that may not be a bad thing).
