@enigmatico@mk.absturztau.be +Y up probably makes the most sense to people who are used to looking at 2D graphs, like in math class, where usually the Y coordinate is up.
Personally I think +Z up makes the most sense. For example your drawing a topdown map in 2D (just X and Y) and then you just add the Z coordinate to make your map in 3D. If you use +Y up you would have to draw your initial map with just a X and Z coordinate which would be weird.

This is because the screen is drawn from the top left corner to the bottom right corner. And by screen draw I mean, how old CRTs used to draw the image.
I have no idea why +Y is up in 3D games. Probably because OpenGL did that? Someone must have done that first and everyone copied it.
The standard should be left hand, +X is right, +Y is forward, +Z is up.
