So this is the second time now I've seen someone make the (good!) observation that SSGs are a non-option to nontechies but here's the thing: It *should* be pretty easy to make a web editor that shows a directory listing, lets you drag in PNGs and edit Markdown files in a little box, and then feeds the directory directly into an SSG, and maybe optionally SCPs them to another server after that fact. Someone coulda made this 10 years ago. Just nobody did https://vmst.io/@jalefkowit/113307815934062221 cc @jalefkowit
@mcc@jalefkowit There are actually a few of them floating around — https://github.com/sveltia/sveltia-cms and https://decapcms.org stand out, but there are still rough edges. One of the virtues™ of WP was/is a very tight focus and unwillingness to add many useful-but-complicating features to the core project.
I think one of the bits that's often overlooked is how important CPanel's early inclusion of WordPress was, at a time when almost every cheap shared hosting account was “Here, have a CPanel login”
@eaton@jalefkowit You're not wrong although it's funny because as a Wordpress user I am completely infuriated by this "GUI editor" which got forced on me with the last security update and which seems to have retroactively broken some number of my pages
