Sick Sun (sun@shitposter.world)'s status on Sunday, 13-Oct-2024 14:09:21 JST Sick Sun @miscbrains @bot @pwm I could write this fairly quickly in other languages but I'm trying to leverage a programming library that gives you automatic distributed state and permissions, as well as the ability to roll back changes if someone did damage. -

But that never really worked out with transferring seamlessly into different servers. Obviously 3d games have a lot more baggage to xfer over- but text level games should be pretty "easy" Only issue is setting up an authoritative save server.

Sick Sun (sun@shitposter.world)'s status on Sunday, 13-Oct-2024 14:13:52 JST Sick Sun @miscbrains @bot @pwm I am thinking about there being a shared consensus-based append-only database for global state. Basically anything goes inside your world but if you want items (beside keys) that can be carried to other worlds, the database will place constraints on what you can write to it as exported items. -

Sick Sun (sun@shitposter.world)'s status on Sunday, 13-Oct-2024 14:17:59 JST Sick Sun @miscbrains @bot @pwm I actually got the idea from a game from the 1990s!
At university, someone made a web java applet called "legend of zelda online" and it was a networked "legend of zelda: a link to the past" where multiple links could walk around in a map and explore and fight. The author then made it so that you could run your own server and link them together through doors. This was all around 1998. I used to play it in Netscape Communicator 4 on HP-UX. -

It's your show, but i think you'd want to fairly rigorously enforce rulesets/mechanics/powerlevels between the "servers." Gamer brains will gravitate to where the most power is, so making the differentiation thematic/aesthetic/narrative based will help to diffuse that.

I don't think i ever ran across that, and I was in a techy enough college at the time where that might have been possible. Tho HP-UX? sheesh obscure unix namedrop there.

Sick Sun (sun@shitposter.world)'s status on Sunday, 13-Oct-2024 14:38:54 JST Sick Sun @miscbrains @bot @pwm oh I will mention, the game got a cease and desist from Nintendo so they changed all the graphics. And it was rewritten in C/DirectX for Windows. It still exists! Now it's called "Graal Classic":
