Guinan said it. This scene still gives me chills every time:

What writers. What a pair of actors.
To be clear, because it’s a point of potential confusion:
The relevance here is not that LLMs are Mr. Data. They are not.
The relevance is that there’s this culty SV cohort that’s not actually trying to find realistic and worthy applications for ML, but rather is off on this bender of “AGI! AI will completely change all jobs! We must burn the planet to let the machines will solve climate change!! Also, LLMs will become Skynet!!” …and there’s a slaver mindset lurking beneath the surface there.
By “slaver mindset,” I mean the idea that the potential resulting wealth growth makes it morally justifiable (or even necessary) for some people to be disposable people — which as it happens is •exactly• the argument that so-called “effective altruism” makes.
Stuff like, say, Eric Schmidt saying we should give up on solving climate change in favor of building more AI data centers is not, not, not the same thing as chattel slavery. Nope. But it is rooted in the same moral emptiness, the same belief that some people should be disposable so that others may prosper. The former will slip into the latter with alarming speed if given the chance, I promise you.
If this seems overwrought, if you’re taking the prospect of AGI seriously and think I’m exaggerating, ask the AI executives this question:
When your AGI replaces human intelligence, are you willing to pay it wages?
If not, then either (1) the “AGI” part is a hoax or (2) you’re advocating slavery.
@cam
It most certainly is not. And people are always trying to buy new clothes for it.
