      @GerhardD the black wire has a ghost voltage on it, seems it's not connected to anything and getting a voltage via capacitive coupling

      @GerhardD It's showing ~87V vs neutral/ground and 142V vs live.

      @ryanc could also be the return contact of some device. did you check which voltage it yields against different potentials? (prot., gnd. different ac power) use a voltmeter, and be sure to only touch it with a pliers.

      @GerhardD Nominally 230V, my meter says 240V.

      My old apartment in Millbrae, California had 132V, which PG&E said was "fine". :thisisfine:

      @GerhardD I connected it to neutral with my meter measuring current, was like 43 micro amps.

      @ryanc looks like the return wire of a differnt phase to me. try this, with meter set to current (amps). start with highest range. but be sure to switch off power first, and check that there really is no voltage on the brown wire. we can then see if any device starts working, and calculate its power demand. Id unsure, better dont touch anything.

      @GerhardD I only connected the meter after the purple wire in the photo survived, and I tried the input labeled "10A (10 secs max) fused" first.

      @ryanc brave try, that could have damaged your meter. Maybe some bell now works or a capacitive light switch is now operative.
