Inspired by this thread by @pluralistic & a conversation I had at a podcast recording earlier today: No company should be allowed to make or sell physical products unless they assume full "end of life" responsibility for both product & the company itself.

When the product breaks/wears out you take it back & if you close down you hand off the duty.

No, I don't know how to do this practically - all I know is we need to take the re- out of recycling.

@jwcph @pluralistic i have hated battery warnings all my life. The package says do not throw away, but they offer no options (I'm old enough that this was true). Telling me what I'm not allowed to do doesn't absolve a company of responsibility. Are we all supposed to build museums to our spent batteries?

@ATLeagle @jwcph @pluralistic nevermind what the eventual disposition if the batteries (eg learning a few years ago that most recycling isn't actually recycled), I have my old batteries in a box when I collect enough of them I take them to the battery section of my county dump. Presumably they do something more responsible than if I put it in my regular trash

@djotaku @jwcph @pluralistic there is a store near me that will take less than a certain weight for free.

When I have enough, I will continuously take small batches from my car to the store until the clerk gives up.

@MacBalance @jwcph @pluralistic yep. This is why I included the part about age. Batteries have always had the label. Recycling locations haven't always existed. And it's still a problem being solved external to the manufacturers.

@ATLeagle @jwcph @pluralistic I think they idea is that they should be disposed of separately not general landfill trash. My county does have a category for them at recycling or hazmat drop off.
