Love to listen to people talk about elections and Detroit like there is any scenario where the city that voted 90+% Democrat two elections in a row has any chance of doing anything different this time.
Folks, Detroit matters to Trump for two reasons:
A) it's part of his "rigged elections" theory and he has repeatedly pretended he lost Michigan in 2020 because dead ppl in Detroit voted. It's nonsense.
B) Racism and white flight. The word "Detroit" gets cracker American nazis riled up b/c of 67

Trump may well take Michigan; Michigan has a LOTTA Nazis, the Nazis Party there is crooked as fuck, and the Dem candidate for President is currently backing a genocide that's DEEPLY unpopular with Muslim Americans in and around the major urban centers in Michigan - but there is no scenario whatsoever where Trump WINS or does well in Detroit
Talking about Detroit is a dogwhistle for Trump, that mobilizes the cracker suburban Nazis he needs to win the state. It has nothing to do with the D itself

Like, you know how the words "Portland," "Berkley," and "Chicago," are all fascist shorthand for completely made up moral panics and energized reactionary conspiracy theories?
Yeah "Detroit" is the exact same thing but for Michigan and the larger Midwest. If Trump is talking about Detroit, what he's saying is "fuck Black people" and "do white supremacy."
That's what it means. Every time.

Newsflash: I'm originally FROM Detroit - and now you know where my sparkling personality and raging case of "IDGAF when you think" comes from.
Trust me, the point here is not "Trump is an idiot who insults people he wants to vote for him." That might be true, but he's absolutely not trying to win votes in DETROIT itself; Detroit is a lost cause. He's trying to mobilize cracker suburbanites in Michigan who hate Detroit and don't think Black people should even be allowed to vote.

I could explain the history of Michigan to you but it would take hours; what I can say quickly however is that when Michigan was a GOP stronghold, the state government went out of its way to remove political power from the six largest urban areas and thus non-white majority district voters. They talk about "Detroit" and the other cities because they want to demonize and disempower the places BLACK AND BROWN PEOPLE live, to build and maintain fascist power over the state. Period. That's why.

One of the best side effects of neoliberal policies that empoverished places like Detroit, for the fascists, is that it allowed them to construct an argument against nonwhite empowerment. They say, I've heard it with my own ears, that "before Black people ran those cities, they were safe, clean and prosperous; now they're crime ridden urban wastelands full of corruption; this is why we need to go back to white supremacy/per-Civil Rights Act laws." It's the Reconstruction mythology repurposed.

This is the mindset/ethos/belief system Trump is speaking to when he talks about/slags Detroit. THIS is the ideology he's supporting and every fascist who hears him speak KNOWS that, even if liberal America is too out of touch and high on civility politics to mention it or even notice.

So politely? Detroit doesn't need you to defend it, nor is it a big own to say "Detroiters will remember this at voting time" - Detroiters were never gonna vote for the fascist regardless.
If you want to help, then start talking about the motivations and ideology behind WHY Trump talks about Detroit the way he does - and those motivations and ideology are white supremacist, and fascist in nature. If you can't be arsed to SAY THAT, then just shut the fuck up because you ain't helping.

I had a discussion with a friend a while ago where he was pretty sure Trump was bringing up Chicago for a generic racism dog whistle ( like Portland, or San Francisco are often shorthand, as you said), and he thought at the time that using Detroit would be too obvious.
Of course, we have moved on from such subtlety.
Detroit is about as likely to go red as DC. Hell, he's even going to Aurora tomorrow, and CO isn't going to suddenly go red- but he can do a racism there.

See? We had to do it before because now they are getting organized, and now this isn't going to be enough, because they might fight back to overcome the oppression they clearly needed before now.
And look how much this oppression costs! I know it's resulting in taking more money from you, but we simply have to keep this other group under control. I mean, they seem to be so angry and dangerous for no reason!
