Idk why, but i think it would be so bad ass to own a server building.
Just a building full of computing lol

@Tony @dcc @i Oh I know man, or at the very least a server setup to exactly your standards.
I have paranoia issues about the internet, like its state in the future so I hoard data like crazy. Books, games etc.
I like the idea of having a silo of cool shit.

Landlords are CASHING IN BIG TIME—filling buildings with SERVERS instead of office workers! It's a TOTAL GAME CHANGER! They're making MORE MONEY THAN EVER BEFORE! "Mr. President, it's the future of real estate," they told me. HUGE PROFITS! Think BIGGER, Tony! This is where the SMART MONEY is! #FutureIsNow #MassiveProfits

same, but for me I need a "reason" to buy more computer stuff because it's expensive and i can't justify spending the money.
But if someone just needed to host something and I had to buy a giant server rack...i mean...well then i have to.

@Tony @dcc @i Yeah for me the biggest hurdle is storage costs. Liek we were talking about earlier a 2 tb ssd runs almost 200 right?
I can string some sbc's together ez but then 5 pi's also gonna cost you.

yah, I was just doing some math.
Using my personal ssd as an example (the partition im on is only 200g which is about 50g of my personal stuff) if you were to get some customers who just want single/static website site hosting, or relatively low traffic stuff, you're looking at the $6-$20/month range.
So I currently have enough space to do around two vps with like 4-8g memory and 25g storage which would bring in like $120-$300 per year. Essentially just paying for internet and hardware.
But that being said, a fresh ssd you could fit a lot vps's on it so it it seems like for $200 and a dedicated ssd, you could at least make a little money if you got 5-10 customers.

@Tony @dcc @i Word.
Im eyeballing this LattePanda sigma as kind of a base station. It has 3 m.2 slots so conceivably I could have several terabytes of storage. That might solve a number of my backup issues at least.
But if you can whip up a few vps and start renting them out I would assume it would eventually pay for itself.
You would also be doing a good service to the internet by giving back so to speak.

Same, i mean the website i use for painting took me like 20 hours to set up and now costs me $2/month
whereas if i would have used something like wix, it would be like $50 a month (because you have to pay google for custom domains and wix sucks the big google dick).
It didn't save me much money, but at least i save money every month and control my own domains which is something.

Well for small businesses it's so prohibitively expensive to use a lot of the tools you need to be competitive.
Hell, even with my painting stuff, my bulk emailing saves me probably $2000/month (or more) that other contractors have to pay for either website marketing, angies leads, ect.

@Tony @dcc @i I bet man.
I think best path to take is the most self empowering one.
If one doesnt know where to start there are people that can help.
I mean I run all my own stuff and it really doesnt set me back much, hosting etc

@Tony @dcc @i 100. It doesn't matter to some giant company or say the pentagon because that's they're understanding of the world. For the average person or small business its real mafia shit.

@Tony @dcc @i Oh aws is corpo hell.
Remember all those idiots from twitter that came over here when Elon bought it?
I saw these fucking tards trying to set up masto instances on aws and then begging for like 1000's of dollars "to help keep the lights on"
some of that was obvious grift but holy fuck
