@sofiav To each their own. A government having my biometric data scares me. Every system these days is hackable and that would be pretty catastrophic.

@sofiav You are automatically registered, it updates when you move; if you are not registered this way, it's easy to register another way. When elections come up, there are lots of PSAs and folk will talk with homeless folk. As for the government collecting more info, they already have that. Mine does not have my biometric data.

What do your poor people do if they don't have the latest cell phone?

@CStamp most Brazilians have smartphones, but those who don't can go to their local TSE office before the election to get the paper document if they don't already have it, but there might be a line. Also no one is required to update their address for voting purposes unless they move to a different city, not just a different address in the same city. How does your government know when you move?

@CStamp digitalization has actually made things a lot easier and more efficient for poor Brazilians, and the main people who have a problem with the biometric IDs for voting are Bolsominion fascists who are listening to conspiracy theories about the voting machines being "hacked" (they literally can't be hacked because they can't connect to the internet). I'm criticizing the way this was implemented, but I don't have a problem with it in theory.

@sofiav Government requiring a facial scan seems rather scary to me. Here, you pay your taxes, you are automatically registered and automatically receive info on all your polling and voting options when an election comes up.

@CStamp that seems like that requires your government having even MORE information about you behind the scenes? Like, what do your taxes have to do with voting? Are people who are too poor to pay taxes not allowed to vote?

The app I'm using is a digital alternative to a paper document that I also have, I just thought this would be easier to use 🤷♀️

I can't read the text with the rest of the instructions once my glasses are off while holding my phone at arm's length to take a selfie

@CStamp not really? The scan is for authentication in the app that shows your polling place and where you check that everything is up to date

Oh yeah, the other glasses-related thing I did today was download the Brazilian voter registration app to check that my polling place for tomorrow hadn't changed, and it required a biometric face scan, which, fine, and asked me to take my glasses off, which...fine...and then gave further instructions on the screen.........???

DO YOU PEOPLE NOT UNDERSTAND THE PROBLEM HERE?!

Every fucking face recognition thing does this. WHY?! 😡🤦♀️💀 #a11y

@biloti @sofiav You are at a protest, fighting for a right. An asshole government is ruling who wants to continue to deny those rights. They can identify every single person at the protest.

"But we need this data to make sure of fair elections" is "I want a reason to collect this data."

No one is collecting biometric data for a common good, they collect it for mass surveillance, for profit, for a lot of non benign reasons. That creeps me out.
