   Tired of the blind dumb AI/ML bashing. Not all of it is bad, things are rarely ever that simple, and AI/ML is no exception.

   Yes AI is marketing, but that doesn't mean all the AI/ML stuff is bogus, or even that it always uses more energy. Try look up e.g GraphCast or AlphaFold that are radically improving weather prediction while also doing it with less resources, and democratising protein folding by making it that much lighter that everyone can do it, removing a bit of monopoly from Big Pharma.

     @anthropy I have tried to have nuanced discussion about it but it's a losing battle, people right now want socially acceptable targets to have open hate, it's a psychological longing. And AI is the current thing.
     
     I have tried to talk about ethical self-trained and self-hosted models and people are just like "I don't care fuck off with it"

     No. I'm a realist. I see that nobody is answering the questions that we need to answer *right now*;
     - Big Tech just wants AI to save them and make them relevant again
     - Governments are just waiting to see how it plays out
     - Society is partially blindly rejecting it and partially blindly trusting it, when it's not going away, and only going to get more complicated

     NOBODY is ready to answer questions like "WHAT IF Self-aware superhuman AI shows up TOMORROW?"

     If you actually care about improving things rather than just getting on the same bandwagon as everyone else, it's vital to have a nuanced and informed opinion, otherwise you're not going to have the impact you hope for. Neither AI nor ML is new, and the only reason you are upset about it now is because tech companies are shoving it in your face to try and be relevant. But the things you actually see advertised is a fraction of what's going on. We can't just "get rid of AI", even if we'd want to.

     or even questions like "what if a healthcare provider decides to use ML/Algorithms/statistics to decide whether someone should be insured or not" which has been happening for DECADES .. and that is the absolute tip of the iceberg.

     and please don't prove my point by going "AI will never XYZ", it's not about bashing things for social media brownie points, it's about preparing for the fucking singularity on our fucking doorstep, it will come, sooner or later, regardless of denialism
