    How stupid is it to:

    • copy all of my server storage to a TrueNAS pool (including some docker container postgres/mysql/mariadb database folders) on a new NAS

    • mount the new pool (including all previously stated db directories) as an smb share

    • try to use postgres/mysql/mariadb containers on the server while their data is stored in the smb share

    ?

Apparently pretty stupid. I have some kind of permissions issue (the db containers like to set the permissions as root:root) and I don’t know how to change that on the smb share without just 777ing the whole directory like a :sickos: :sickos2: .

What’s the Proper ©️®️™️ way to do this?

    #linux #truenas #selfhosted #ubuntu

I don't think you can. It should refuse to start due to the networked filesystem not supporting certain things.

@thomcat iSCSI would definitely work, NFS will have the same problem

@feld i kinda figured as much. Would iSCSI or NFS work, or should I just keep the DBs on the main server?

@thomcat im pretty sure it's possible with nfs, though thoroughly annoying (also for permissions issues)

i have a feeling iscsi would be easiest but frankly i dont know shit about iscsi i just assume it cant be as bad as smb or nfs

@mint @thomcat TruNAS doesn't support NBD, that's a very Linux thing right now

@feld @thomcat I'm gonna shill NBD as well. Much simpler protocol than iSCSI thus is easier to setup and has lower overhead, similar to Wireguard vs. OpenVPN. I think Scaleway used it as a main storage on some of their VMs, worked reasonably well.

@mint @thomcat looks like there's a working package for nbd you can install on FreeBSD but I don't know if TruNAS includes this as a feature yet
