@FloatingGhost this was a big deal because Cingular sucked and Verizon had great coverage.

@sun @FloatingGhost I had it on AT&T when there was like zero AT&T coverage in Wisconsin. It was useless. Could barely make calls on it.
BUT this did actually push AT&T to quickly expand further into Wisconsin, so that was nice I guess.

@feld @FloatingGhost Yeah AT&T (Cingular renamed to AT&T) had absolutely dog shit coverage in the midwest and in particular rural communities.

@sun @FloatingGhost Once upon a time Verizon had great coverage because they actually invested in telecommunications infrastructure. This made Wall Street very angry. Wall Street fired the CEO. The End.

@zaitcev @FloatingGhost @feld yeah the reason is that Verizon was using CDMA which only like three countries used

@sun @feld @FloatingGhost I think it was back in the days of GSM, which required small cells and large numbers of towers. Now that both Verizon and AT&T use LTE, which has larger cells, the coverage ought to even out. I'm on Verizon because I need it at remote airports (to call Flight Service or a taxi cab). I had a couple of overlay network phones, like Boost Mobile, and they absolutely sucked in coverage.

@feld @FloatingGhost @zaitcev remember too there wasn't an app store when it launched, not to put it down too much but it was an advanced feature phone

@feld @FloatingGhost @zaitcev did you know the original idea was to allow only webapps, but they realized that it was waaaaay too early for that

@feld @FloatingGhost @sun Do you guys remember a CN skit with Jon Stewart where he says "Apple, Jones, Camera 3" and rants how "your amazing iPone cannot keep a call in the middle of New York City!"

@sun @feld @FloatingGhost
WAP lives in the same category of oddball tech in my mind where BTX resides (and possibly Minitel). It's like what the people of the past thought the future was - only real. Smartphone of Manabi (2005) for illustration. Because of its large size, it's carried in a holster. What a path not taken! Instead, every young woman stuffs a phone in her rear pocket.

@feld @FloatingGhost @sun The main topic was the raid of Apple's pocket cops on a blogger named Chen, who found iPhone 6 in a bar.

@BOB @FloatingGhost @sun I wonder how much of it is shareholders, and how much is mutual fund managers who vote their clients' stocks according to their own agendas. Still ultimately the fault of shareholders for not paying enough attention.
