Here's what we say in our mission: "Whether that’s advertising supported, or funded by charities and non-profits, or based on paid-for services, or affiliate revenue, we are working to find ways that companies can do well in the Fediverse."

@evan @newsmast Can I ask, what does "financially viable" in the foundation's mission statement mean? How long until I can expect facebook ad trackers on every instance?

@AngelicAura @newsmast "companies" is probably the wrong word there -- projects or service providers might be better.
Anyway, we'd like to help inform, brainstorm and support services so they can stick around and thrive for the medium and long term (if they want to!).
I personally think it's better for users to find a home on the Fediverse and stick there as long as they want, rather than having to move because the admin got sick or ran out of money.

@AngelicAura @newsmast personally, I'm a big fan of cooperatives (I helped found CoSocial, the Canadian fediverse coop), but there's a lot of overhead, and it's not for everyone.
Other people like the simplicity and clarity of a software-as-a-service model.

@AngelicAura @newsmast with respect to ads, I don't think that a service being ad-supported should preclude it from joining the Fediverse. I do think, and I guess from your question that you agree, that forcing ads into the rest of the stream is a non-starter.

That is to say, I can believe you have the best intentions, but then, you're not synonymous with the whole foundation, and I can fairly easily imagine it being steered places nobody here wants to go. Especially with the kind of folks that are onboard from the start

I mean, I'm already donating to the foundation that runs my home instance. Sounds to me like you're already there then? As in, that was always an option?
You did lose me at "advertising" though. With how intrusive and downright disgusting internet advertising has become, I can hardly cheer on that. You can call me out on slippery slope, but unfortunately you're the one happily sailing under one banner with meta, and I'd sooner trust a rabid wolf with a small child than meta to be ethical about privacy and advertising.
