     Yeah, the fastest way to lose a general election in the States is to pander to your base past the primaries. In all of my life I have never seen politicians not just pander to the base, but the absolute bottom of the base.

     Well, no, it does make sense in a way, it was just a big stupid gamble and the Republicans are going to lose, not just now, but for the foreseeable future. You're seeing their death throes and the end of an age. It's ugly, but it makes sense.
