    Watching the US debate and it’s fucking terrifying.

    We really are (in both UK and US) creating the perfect conditions for fascism or something very much like it.

    But can we be fucking clear. This is not the fault of the people refusing to vote for increasingly shitty Labour/Democrat candidates.

    This is the fault of Labour/The Democrats for being shitty and embracing the exact narratives and economic positions that empower the right.

      @uoou In the U.S., we're allowed roughly 3.5 years out of every four to fight like hell for progressive change, including working hard to promote progressive candidates. But once we know who the Democratic nominee will be in a presidential election year, that pauses, and our job is to support and elect that Democrat. Period. Because the alternative is fascism.

      No one's angry at progressives for pushing hard-left 7/8 of the time. It's when they KEEP pushing AGAINST THE ONLY PARTY + NOMINEE WHO CAN PREVENT FASCISM, DURING AN ELECTION CAMPAIGN, that we get just a wee bit testy.

      @msbellows After 40+ years of the increasingly rapid transfer of wealth and assets from the state and ordinary people to billionaires, stagnant productivity and real-terms falling pay, crumbling infrastructure and public services, barbaric wars of aggression and support for genocidal regimes, and the absolute failure to even begin to address an existential threat to our species…

      …the people are equally culpable for not voting for that for the tenth time?

      No. The conditions for Trump were set by 40 years of neoliberal bullshit, not the people who want to vote for something other than neoliberal bullshit.

      @zbrown @uoou Thanks.

      Sure, it's ultimately the public's fault. Party power brokers still influence candidate selection, but no longer actually control it. Donors and media influence it, but AOCs still sometimes succeed. In the end, primary voters choose the nominees. Don't like that the primary voters chose a centrist? Then work *within* that party to influence things differently next time (but ultimately it'll still be the voters' choice).

      As Churchill said: democracy is the worst possible form of government, except for all the rest.

      > surely you [ @msbellows ] don't think it's the public's fault that you [ @msbellows and those ‘working hard to promote progressive candidates’ ] *yet again* failed to have a decent candidate?

      @zbrown @uoou I still don't know the answer to my question. Are you referring to the U.S. in general, or the Democratic National Committee, or the Democratic Party more broadly, or me personally? I can't offer a serious response without knowing.
