   The “free” WiFi at the mall won’t let me connect unless I give them my:

   - email
   - home address
   - phone number
   - full name
   - date of birth
   - gender
   - annual household income

   This isn’t feeling so free to me…

     If you setup an Iodine server (TCP-over-DNS) you can get free Internet from almost any access point without signing in.

     Not that I know of. It's not that difficult, but it does take some work. You can setup a Linux VM and try it out in your home first.
     
     If that works, you want to start by setting up a virtual machine on some hosting provider. A small $5/m VM would do. If you've never touched Linux before, there are a lot of tutorials.
     
     Then you just need to install and start Iodine. It should be in most Linux distro's package manager. You install it, start the service (systemctl is used on Linux to control services) and then put the client on your laptop.
     
     There might be people who sell Iodine as a service, but I dunno offhand. It might take you a bit to learn, but it's a useful skill.

     oh then it shouldn't be that much of a challenge for you. There appears to be an iodine package for Arch:

     ..but not one for Artix. Not sure how they handle migrating systemd to their init system between distros. You could probably still install the package and run the daemon from a terminal, just to test it from another laptop in your house.
     
     There appear to be quite a few tutorials:

     Most of them seem to get your to setup iodine first and then add a SOCKS tunnel too for encryption (with nearly everything being on TLS today, this isn't as necessary as it once was, but probably still a good idea).
     
     I should probably write my own tutorial at some point.. :gummythink:

     @djsumdog @dramypsyd i use artix and slackware linux, so i generally know how to operate linux. I just need tutorials that spell things out clearly, as I don't possess a ESR-tier knowledge of Linux.

     oh I'm not a fan either. My desktop is on Gentoo/openrc and my work laptop and almost all my servers are on VoidLinux (which uses runit). My NAS is on Alpine (also openrc). I have very few machines/VMs with systemd-based distros and try to avoid them whenever possible.

     @djsumdog @dramypsyd any package that works in arch works in artix. I've never had a problem. It's a little annoying when it's in the AUR, but w/e. I have a loathing of system dildo. But if you're fine with it, w/e. I don't want to get into that here, I'm sure you've read a thread or two.lol
