Esau gave up his birthright for a bowl of stew.

Americans gave it up for cheap strawberries.

@VIcFury @5arrows the core of this isn't consumerism though, it's much more primal, and it's why I said what I did about slavery.

@Shadowbroker2135 @5arrows strawberries are quite a bit trickier to harvest than corn

@5arrows @sickburnbro Also strawberries are expensive because farmers are subsidized to grow corn and soy instead.

@Shadowbroker2135 @5arrows @sickburnbro if they get too dense or get too many weeds, you loose airflow on the berries and you can get a lot of moldy berries. we had so much rain this year that I ended up have a lot of mold problems with mine because it was just constantly wet during their whole fruiting season.

@EssentialUtinsil @5arrows @sickburnbro Before growing them I always had the impression they were weak plants because of how my grandparents would fuss over their strawberry beds. When I had abandoned them but hadn't dismantled the boxes yet I was very surprised to find them thriving. I actually felt really guilty after that 😅

@Shadowbroker2135 @5arrows @sickburnbro they're perennial. commercially, depending on the type they're either planted new every year or every couple years because you want the best production. i have a raised bed full of them, they're a great 'fire and forget' plant if you're just looking to have some fresh berries.

@EssentialUtinsil @5arrows @sickburnbro I grew strawberries in two storage tubs for a few years. The plants never died during winter and kept growing back. They're very tough and tried to take over other tubs I had set up. I wish I had kept them but I couldn't keep up anymore with my job + mandatory OT.

@Shadowbroker2135 @5arrows @sickburnbro strawberries are one of the most labor intensive crops to produce, they are not easy to transport because they damage easily, and have a very short shelf life. they are usually planted by hand, they require mulching either with plastic sheets or straw because they have shallow root systems and don't play well with weeds, and they need to be harvested by hand daily or at least a few times a week in season because they don't all ripen at once.

@Nudhul @EssentialUtinsil @5arrows @Shadowbroker2135 I'm sure the ones you buy in the store are from 8000 miles away and so are picked prior to being ripe and are a cultivar designed for long shipping.

@Nudhul @EssentialUtinsil @5arrows @Shadowbroker2135 Anything you pick when it is ripe is going to be better than picked pre-ripe, then shipped.
